Justice initiates the second suit of the Major Arcana. As the first card of the suit, it signifies the establishment of goals for the fulfillment of yet another stage of the Karmic Task. In this cycle, the objective is to discover what our gifts are and to find a place in society where we can expand through them, since gifts are our tools for the realization of Karma. To use them means to fulfill our mission as human beings.<\/p>\n

Maat, goddess of truth and justice, is seated in a proper position upon the steps of the Primordial Hill. Daughter of Ra, sister and wife of Thoth, she was born from the primordial waters. Her duty was to prevent the world from returning to a state of chaos. The steps are also symbols of this moment of creation, the primordial mound.<\/p>\n
Maat is the symbol of truth and justice. The power of the Pharaoh and of the Judges was conceived through Maat, as they upheld her principles and maintained order. Even the \u201cmonotheistic\u201d Pharaoh Akhenaten kept Maat within his doctrine. She holds in her hands the scales and the sword, objects found in the Book of the Dead, along with the ostrich feather. The Books of the Dead were inscriptions placed in tombs to instruct the deceased on their journey through the underworld.<\/p>\n
After death, the spirit would go to the underworld, where the heart, representing consciousness, was placed on a scale and weighed against the ostrich feather. If the person had lived an honest life, free of crimes or lies, their heart would be as light as the feather of Maat, and the individual would then be absorbed, joining the other gods. The guilty were devoured by the soul-eater, Ammit.<\/p>\n
In Tarot, the scales symbolize Justice, the power of a person to bring about the realization of their gifts.
